frank miller's batman: the dark knight returns
The Batman in this issue was so tightly detailed and fully understood. From the beginning, Batman had already had his history and plenty of things had already happened that would leave someone new to the Batman series confused a little possibly. However, they go in to backstory with, may I add, much less cheesiness than we can expect from its predecessors.
There were very particular things I loved about this comic. I very much enjoyed the TV screen shapes in the beginning, clarifying the fact that it is a TV segment, and the pacing of the story that they did very well with panels. Some moments would be nothing but panels, like when it showed his parents dying on page 23, and others would have a lot of words. The art really depicted a message. Another example would be when Batman had a heart attack during his fight with Superman. It showed the actual heartbeat line, then again when Superman discovers Bruce is actually still alive and faking his own death with the pill.
This entire story, art, dialogue, story, was so amazing. I enjoyed the female Robin and the in depth detailing of the psychology behind Two-Face and Joker that really made the piece so much scarier. Because everything was so serious, the hint of cheesiness that usually comes with these comics didn't save the piece from being creepy. It was very creepy! Down to the backstory of Bruce's bat cave incident, to the many drawings of bats and mutants throughout. This is the Batman I like most.
I thoroughly enjoyed this comic, much more than the other ones! Maybe its just my generation bias (Even though the older ones were good too). Until next time!
