My readings for this response will be on Superman: The Origin of Superman (1948), Superman: The Super-key to Fort Superman (1958), Superman #146, and Superman #149 (1961).
These reads were awesome. I am seeing Superman evolve as a character as well as a concept. In the beginning comics from the Chronicles series, Superman felt much more simple and was introduced very quickly. Only in the end did they dive more deeply into his origin story. However, this Origin story from 1948 really went deeply into small details that were absent in Chronicles. I especially liked the Story of Superman's Life, where we get to see his cousin, Supergirl, and his dog, Astro. I found the stories of this to be fascinating, and the scientific explanation of Krypton being an atomic bomb bound to blow up sounded so cool and futuristic, it sucked me even more into a story I was already interested in. The continuous detailing of the Superman chronology is so great and rich. Even down to the machine on Krypton that killed all the smog and pollution in the air... that was a neat thing to throw in!
The story of Lex Luthor was also cool to read. He truly is diabolical! He creates a cure for cancer just to escape jail and kill Superman. Although the story was 'imaginary', I thought it was great and important in the Superman continuity because it showed how evil Lex is and how far he will go to defeat the man that represents everything good.
My favorite story was the Super-key to Fort Superman story. I loved seeing Superman and Batman joke together and be the ideal best buddies. It was a good chance to be Superman just be Superman, without putting up a front as Clark Kent. He was so himself with Batman and even pulled his leg after Batman completely invaded his property and melted a wax figure. I would've been mad. But Superman is much to good of a sport to keep him from pulling a fast one back.
